Huna Wisdom

The Seven Key
Principles of Essential Huna

Huna is a practical philosophy rooted in ancient Hawaiian tradition. These seven key principles offer a clear, usable framework for understanding the self, shaping experience, and living with greater intention.

What Is Huna?

Huna is a practical system of discovering your emotional, intellectual, and spiritual selves, rooted in ancient wisdom preserved in the secret teachings of the Kahuna of Hawaii. Rediscovered by Max Freedom Long, this modern philosophical-psychological-spiritual understanding of the inner world of consciousness opens the door to a new awareness of your Three Selves and presents practical ways to communicate and work with your mind, heart, and spirit to heal and become whole. The teachings are profound but simple and you can begin immediately to apply what you are learning to make a powerful difference in your life.

This knowledge is important for people of all ages to understand and use for it brings a way of discovering your unique talents and gifts, supports and strengthens your self-confidence, and helps you build a framework for a life of happiness and prosperity.

I have been studying, researching, and teaching Huna for the past five decades. I teach the concepts and practices in ways that invite students and seekers to experience the power of the Huna teachings from their own perspectives and gently lead them into a deeper understanding of the Inner World and how the Inner World creates and influences the Outer World. You become acquainted with the Three Selves that make up your personality, their characteristics, and how to communicate with each one, to bring you into harmony and balance.

The Seven Key Principles of Essential Huna

Each key principle is a lens, a way of seeing that opens you to new perspectives and possibilities for action, healing, and understanding.

ALOHA

Love

The most powerful force in Life.

Aloha is more than a greeting, it is a way of living, of sharing all the Love and Joy that you are in the present moment. It is connecting, exchanging, and receiving the very substance of life with all of Creation. Aloha – “the joyful exchange of energy (mana) in this present moment.”

KALA

Forgiveness

All healing begins with forgiveness.

Kala is the process of releasing old hurts to the Light, which transforms and transmutes all darkness. Forgiveness opens pathways, unties knotted problems, and brings us back to the Truth of Aloha – Love. Kala’a – “to make holy or sacred.” Forgiveness returns us to the sacredness of Life.

LOKAHI

Unity

What is Lokahi?

Lokahi reminds us that we are one with all of Life. What I do affects all other parts of Creation. I am responsible for my thoughts, words, and deeds. May we always strive for unity and peace. Ho’olokahi – “to make peace and unity.”

MAHALO

Gratitude

What is Mahalo?

Mahalo is the gratitude that comes from the heart. It begins with gratitude to the Creator for our life and then to our own Aumakua, Uhane, and Unihipili, our integrated selves of heart, mind, and spirit. We express mahalo in every moment. Mahalo for all our blessings.

O'HANA

Family

What is O'hana?

O’hana is family and the sacred family bond. We are born into family and grow in family. May we always respect and honor all our families - our personal inner family of Aumakua, Uhane, and Unihipili; our family of Love; our chosen family; and our O’hana Ola, the Family of Life.

PONO

To Make Right

What is Pono?

Pono is an opportunity to make amends and ask for forgiveness for any hurt we have done to ourselves or to others. Reviewing our life daily and making things right is an important personal responsibility and keeps the pathway to our Aumakua clear and strong. The Ho’oponopono ceremony of forgiveness helps us return to unity and peace.

PULE

Prayer

What is Pule?

All of our desires and wishes are prayers, informal Pule. It is better to make conscious and carefully thought-out pule, considering the ramifications of the answers and making sure there is no hurt involved. Our prayers go first to our own Aumakua as we pray for the highest good of all. Amama ua noe, lele wale akua la – Our prayers have taken flight. Let the rain of blessings fall.
